Thank you so much for your considerate & generous work! I was especially moved you being able to visit the resting place of Edmonia Lewis. I especially love how this visit served as a reminder "of how people can craft communal lives." Communal lives are something I'm often thinking about concerning the atrocities we are witnessing. Lastly, your sojourn to find Lewis' grave reminds me so much of Alice Walker writing about navigating the high grasses & plants to find Zora Neale Hurston's grave. Thank you for sharing 💙.
Thank you for posting this, Kay! I wasn't thinking about Alice Walker's search for Hurston's grave at the time, but now that you mention it, I do see the parallels. I was aided in my quest by my colleague and friend, Prof. Jennifer Brody (Stanford), who is writing a book about Edmonia Lewis right now.
It's always great to have a friend to sojourn with. I loved reading your book All That She Carried. I'm currently reading Night Flyer & it's such a beautiful read. I will be sure to add Prof. Brody's book to my to be read list!
Night Flyer is awesome! A started reading yesterday evening and could hardly put it down this morning to do my own work. It is also a beautiful book--kudos to the press and Professor Gates for launching this wonderful series.
How wonderful to have found Edmontia! I hope you’re still in Bozeman mid July whe I return from my east coast sojourn…
I'll be here, Kate. :)
